How to Arrange Pictures on a Wall
Common wisdom, personal preference, and current trends all play a part in helping you decide what the best layout for your picture frames will be. Here are some guidelines to help you get started.
A Sizeable Single Frame
Give a big picture importance and permit it to command the wall where it hangs by hanging it by itself. Make sure you pay attention to scale; this generally can only work well using a fairly large picture frame.
Several Frames of the Same Size
Hanging up pairs in a diagonal design with a little bit of overlap is a very attractive arrangement that was preferred in the mid-twentieth century, and continues to be. Many people prefer, however, that pairs of frames to be positioned symmetrically either beside each other or vertically, with one aligned above the other.
Clusters of Three
Sets of three frames are typically hung symmetrically, but they don’t have to be. To give an example, you might have three nice blue picture frames that you might hang in your kid’s room in an asymmetrical pattern such as a diagonal line, or with the two outer frames being even with one another and the middle one being placed a little bit higher or lower than the two side frames. Another attractive arrangement, depending on the wall, would be a symmetrical design with one frame hanging directly above the first one and the third hung to the side of the first (like an “L” shape).
Groups of Four or Maybe More
When you have four frames or more, in that case you would normally arrange them either in one straight line, or a block-like pattern such as a square or rectangle. You will want to check out these extra tips if the frames you have are varying sizes rather than a set.
Creating a Wall of Photographs
Groups of mixed sizes and designs are incorporated into a cohesive design on a picture wall. The frames can be the same style or united by a theme, such as all black or all silver picture frames; even so, these types of groupings often incorporate a blend of styles and shades as well. The art showcased can be a selection of family photographs or sport paraphernalia, travel photos or a combination of different types of art. Some photograph walls even incorporate other items like small mirrors, sconces, or other extras.
There isn’t any one best layout for a photo wall, but there are some guidelines. Groupings appear more natural when you include randomness. That having been said, try and develop a little bit of symmetry without causing it to look symmetrical – to accomplish this, line up the top or bottom of a frame with its neighbor. If you separate the thick and thin frames from each other, then this will enable you to create balance involving the frames. Do not space the frames apart too much; usually two to four inches apart is best. Any farther than that and you risk individual pictures appearing like they’re off on their own.
The final thing you should remember is to maintain a general shape in your grouping- the outer edges of your frames really should form a basic symmetrical shape like a circle or a square. Picture this: if you were to sketch the shape on the wall, would the frames be balanced within it? If this is the case then you have probably ended up with a very nice arrangement of photos on your wall. However, you will probably neat to make some adjustments if it isn’t.
Simply make sure that you invest some time and follow these tips, and everybody is sure to complement you on your lovely wall design.
